Academic Advisement

Southern Crescent Technical College recognizes that sound academic advisement is essential to student success. Each student is assigned an academic advisor who will advise him/her concerning courses needed to complete a program of study. Students and advisors are responsible for monitoring appropriate courses to ensure that required courses are taken in the proper sequence. Each semester, students should be diligent about checking courses they register for against their required programs of study to assure they remain on target for graduation.

Our college philosophy is to guide students through the advisement process so that they quickly achieve four objectives:

  1. Identify courses necessary to achieve their academic goals.
  2. Become competent at registering themselves using BannerWeb.
  3. Gain an active awareness of their own development.
  4. Understand the integration of their academic goals with their personal, social and career goals.

Advisement procedures and points of contact may change as students advance, but

new students must meet with an academic advisor.

  1. Choose an advisor from the Faculty Advisors list
  2. Schedule an appointment via email or phone.
    • Full-time instructors are responsible for advising students within their departments.
    • The role of an academic advisor is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals. The ultimate responsibility for making informed decisions about life goals and educational plans rests with the individual student. However, the academic advisor can assist by working with students to identify and assess alternatives and consequences of decisions.
    • An academic advisor’s responsibilities include helping students to design a program of study, interpret catalogs and degree requirements, and choose among academic alternatives. Advisors also monitor academic progress and recommend appropriate resources to answer questions or solve problems related to academic and career matters. They are also valuable sources of information about College policies, procedures, resources, and programs.
    • Academic advisors post scheduled office hours and can consult with students regularly to plan appropriate class schedules. Students are encouraged to contact advisors during the first two weeks of the announced registration period for academic counseling.
    • If you need to contact your advisor for academic counseling during the student registration period, you may email your advisor with any questions you may have. This will give your advisor the opportunity to verify that your course choices are a requirement within your program of study, or to suggest acceptable substitutes if they are not.
